Wear a bicycle helmet, save your life

My boyfriend didn’t start wearing a bicycle helmet until about two years ago (full disclosure: me either). If he still practiced that unsafe habit, on July 17 he might have wound up in the morgue instead of the emergency room.

Let’s hope the 3rd shot’s the charm. I miss my running play list!

I don’t even care how ridiculous you think my play list is (actually, even better — one up me! Tell me about your embarrassing play list songs!). I’m just so excited to soon be listening to it while pounding the pavement one day in the near (I hope!) future. Continue reading

Poor dog! My running injuries are hurting her, too

Phoebe has a dog walker visit her every day. I walk her a few times a day. And when I was healthy, I took her running for three-, four-, five- and six-mile runs several times a week. She has exactly zero miles under her belt this year. We’re nearly halfway through the year. Continue reading

Hello doc, goodbye cast! What now?

After my big doctor appointment today, I headed home, had dinner, did some chores and cut my toenails. I was lucky I didn’t cut myself — it was very odd to not have feeling in my third and fourth toes. Continue reading

Sprint triathlon = something good to focus on

I’ve had my ass planted on a bike for months now. I’ve taken up swimming. I hope to run when I’m well. Why not put them all together? Cross-training is widely accepted as a good way to prevent injury. Continue reading

You could argue here, that maybe running isn’t for me (and to that end, I’ve taken up swimming just in case), but this new fad sure does make me wonder: How would my feet do without shoes? Continue reading

Right or wrong? It’s OK to wear a race shirt you didn’t earn.

There’s this unwritten rule among runners that you shouldn’t wear a race shirt you didn’t earn. After being hurt, I’ve had a change of heart on this issue. What do you think about it? Continue reading

My broken foot and pooped piggies: The diagnosis, treatment

I’m no stranger to physical therapy. When I tore my MCL and dislocated my kneecap in 2005, I did several weeks’ time in PT. Lots of squats, stair-stepping and other quad-strengthening exercises there. I did time again for plantar fasciitis, and before and after hip surgery. Again, no lack of strength training. So what on earth, I wondered, could I possibly get out of PT for a broken bone? Continue reading

The MRI results are in; my foot is F’d

Thinking back, I almost laugh thinking about how I thought the MRI was just a formality, that my foot was just sore because I was imagining something. Dummy. Continue reading
