Arthritis: A dirty little secret of sports medicine?

Notice the fuzziness around the bone inside the circle. That's the arthritis showing up in an X-ray.

Arthritis, simply defined, is the inflammation of one or more joints. But it’s actually an umbrella term, according to arthritis.org, used to describe a group of 100-plus medical conditions. Continue reading

What a pain in the IT band (how I erased it with PT exercises)

Tal Kopan stretches her IT band after a January run outside.

[Editor's note: Today's post comes to you from guest blogger Tal Kopan. If you'd like to write an injury-related post, message me on Twitter. Thanks!]

Hi. My name is Tal. I’m an athlete, and I have trouble accepting my weaknesses.

I recently learned one of my weaknesses is my IT band.

By way of introduction, I’m a medium distance runner and am working toward a first triathlon, but I consider that my off season. First and foremost, I am an ultimate frisbee player. Continue reading

Yaktrax, DueNorth traction devices for running in snow, ice aren’t foolproof

I've been running outside all winter for a couple of years. Traction devices help get me through.

I hate the treadmill with the white hot passion of a thousand suns. And before I was informed about running outside in the winter safely, I would slog along on the dreadmill for countless boring miles each winter. Continue reading

Hello, shin splints. Are you telling me it’s time to buy new running shoes?

Stretching does a body good, especially if said body is injury-prone.

I’ve picked a hell of a goal race for coming back from my latest injury — a half marathon in Chicago at the end of January. Continue reading

Ugh. The Mrs. Me is injury-prone too (Hot Chocolate 5/15K race report).

Two reasons to celebrate: 1. Chocolate. 2. I made it to the finish, narrowly missing another running injury.

I had high hopes for Kirsten Ankenbrand’s first run. Her first race was the Hot Chocolate 5K — a short one, because, well, she’s a new runner and the maiden version of herself was still working back up in mileage after May’s injury. Continue reading

How jumping jacks crushed my bone, Racine Ironman 70.3 dreams

An X-ray confirmed that I have yet another stress fracture.

This year was supposed to be the Year of No Injuries.

The universe, it seems, had other plans. Continue reading

Stupid is as stupid does: My stupidest injury to date

Doing jumping jacks to stay warm during a pit stop along Bike the Drive. Stupid.

Usually my injuries are just dumb luck. The one I have now is because I was just plain dumb.

Bike the Drive 2011 was particularly chilly this year, and our little one was cold. To warm her up, we did jumping jacks. Continue reading

Kiddo’s crash, road rash and burn on Bike the Drive

Today we kicked off what we had hoped would become an annual family tradition of biking along Lake Shore Drive. We never dreamed it’d end up with a crash and the little one saying she never wants to bike again. Continue reading

Don’t be mad at Jay Cutler; it’s harder to admit injury than keep going

Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler at a press conference earlier this season.

Chicago Bears fans are angry this morning, the day after the Green Bay Packers whopped them on their home field to clinch the NFC championship title. And their anger seems to be focused on injured Bears quarterback Jay Cutler.

Cutler hobbled off the field early in the third quarter with an apparent knee injury.

People all over Chicago, on Facebook and Twitter are calling him a wimp, using other words that I won’t repeat here.

But I’d like to take the opposite stance: I think Cutler did the right thing. Continue reading

Ow. Boob blisters, hot spots are no fun. How to prevent chafing.

It's imperative to have a proper-fitting sports bra. And no, this is NOT a picture of me. (Flickr.com, BiggerBras, Creative Commons License)

I have a love-hate relationship with my sports bras.

I love that they keep the twins in place during runs. (I really don’t need any black eyes; I get hurt enough.)

I hate that over the course of my adult life I’ve had to wear two at a time, tried on 800 until I found one that fits, that they cost so much, that they break down so quickly and that they can cause so much pain if they don’t fit exactly right. Continue reading
